Introducing Split-Tunneling

edited October 2019 in Announcements

Hello all!

We are proud to announce the addition of split-tunneling into our desktop application with the release of version 1.5, which is now available for download on our website, here:

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/download

Split tunneling allows applications to bypass the VPN using the App Exclusions feature. When utilized, the excluded applications will bypass the VPN and connect directly to the internet.

In order to use this newly implemented feature, please select the Network Tab in in the application settings and check the “App Exclusions” box:

You can then select Add Application and exclude the application of your choice. As this is currently a silent release, any feedback you wish to provide would be tremendously beneficial as we look to improve the overall functionality of this feature.

Thanks so much!

  • I have been playing with this. Seems that it is working with a couple of exceptions

It takes a good 30+ seconds for my browser to open its home page. I am using firefox 67 on windows 8.1. Without the VPN, it is at most 3 seconds.

Next, with Outlook 2010 in the excption box, it seems that one of my Outlook Gmail accounts will not log in. That may be my issue but I just wanted to mention it. However, the good news is that I did not get a "someone has your password" notification. So just from that perspective, split tunneling works.

Overall great, but having an unencrypted traffic arriving at the same locating (my machine) as encrypted traffic bothers me. But that is just me.
  • Hey Omnibus!

We wanted to take a moment and thank you for all your feedback regarding 1.5 as well as the assistance you have given us on this forum page. We appreciate all you do. Keep it up!
  • Any way to allow Steam and Battle.net (blizzard) apps to connect while keeping PIA app running? I've tried allowing every steam app but I still get connection issues.

  • Can't get this to go with PLEX  anybody?
  • I'm also having trouble getting this enabled on my Plex media server. Other devices are unable to access the server when the VPN is running.
  • Not sure if this has been asked already or if it's possible but can there be some sort of reverse mode of this feature where only a selected few programs through the VPN and everything else doesn't?
  • +1 for Plex, please.
  • I'm in agreement with p0826019's request.
A reversal option where you pick just the applications you want to use the VPN. By default, everything would bypass VPN.  Call it the 'at work' option.

Either way, I"m very happy this feature has been implemented.
  • Was there a recent change to the split tunneling feature? My apps that were previously working like Streamlabs OBS now fail to connect when passed through the tunnel.
  • ...another +1 for Plex remote access challenges...can NOT for the life of me get this to consistently work...
  • This has become an issue of establishing a constant remote access for Plex Media Server. After trying server settings it has become apparent that you must have a remote access state prior to applying PIA connection. If you have PIA launched prior to trying to have a solid Plex Media server remote access, it will fail and register a Red light of No remote access.

The issue that may arise is on auto startup or after a power failure PIA may launch before remote access is established.

    MacOS Catalina
  • I have some websites that refuse to load while PIA is active. It would be very helpful if we could add the website URL to the Split-Tunel rather than the IP.
  • Firefox and Catalina.

Is the IP address now working with Split Tunnel?  I've been trying to access HBOMax using Split Tunnel (the URL is https://play.hbomax.com/https://play.hbomax.com/ and an online service shows the IP address to be:23.221.75.42) , but the access is still blocked.
